Why WWIBWN exists
WWIBWN started from a familiar feeling: looking back at a stock, fund or cryptocurrency and wishing hindsight had arrived a little earlier.
Most investors have wondered what might have happened if they had invested sooner: $1,000 in Amazon at its IPO, Bitcoin in 2015, or a broad-market ETF and simply left it alone.
Most investing websites focus on what might happen next. WWIBWN focuses on what actually happened. By looking at real historical outcomes, investors can better understand compounding, risk, patience and the market events that shaped each journey.
How returns are calculated
Each scenario uses historical market data to estimate how an investment performed between a chosen start date and the latest available market date.
Choose a starting point
We use a clear date, such as an IPO, an early available trading date or a fixed comparison date.
Calculate the return
The starting investment is divided by the historical price and valued using the latest available price.
Explain the journey
We add the major developments, market events and risks investors faced along the way.
For stocks and ETFs, WWIBWN usually uses historical prices from Yahoo Finance chart data. For crypto scenarios, it uses available market data sources such as CoinGecko or the earliest reliable price history available for that asset.
Results may differ from brokerage statements because of dividends, fees, taxes, currency movements, fractional shares, splits, data corrections or source availability. Unless a scenario says otherwise, figures are educational estimates rather than total-return statements.

WWIBWN is maintained by a person who has spent plenty of time looking back at markets and asking the same question many people ask: what if I had understood the opportunity earlier?
